I met a lady aged 72, lean body, average height, small face with a few teeth outside ready to walk the talk attitude, as strong as a rock. She entered an office me and my friend were a part of. As I stare to notice her more keenly, she unapologetic-ally pulls the chair, sits there confidently as if it was no ones business, looks at us and there is a pause. An awkward silence prevailed. Years later, one of us spoke "Hello Madam. Are you here to meet Niraj?" She gathered all her courage, leaned forward and a soft voice uttered with an extremely bright smile "Yes"
We had organized a meeting with her on the partnerships on a business model proposed to her. She had come to discuss terms and commercial aspects. A perfect Gujarati that she was, questioned us on everything that can go wrong and then what was our back up plan. We assured her of the services we offered to our customers and how it was taken care of. She smiled again. There was something beautifully antagonist about her looks. It was only a nervous team she was trying to intimidate I guess. Every smile was a confirmation on her agreement to the on-going rendezvous. She had clear clauses that were meant to be adhered to.
Trupti Travels is her baby. This was intercepted 15 years ago. She gave birth to this baby at the age of 58! Yes, me and Niraj were thrilled and had our eyes wide open to the breaking news that she accepted the challenge on the so called ‘women on business’ after retirement! She had retired as a Principal of a school nearby her locality. She lives alone today and runs this show with the required staff all by herself very efficiently. She has had an adventurous life and was always on the go while she was already into the teaching profession. So when Niraj asked her “Mam, you have been teaching all your life. What drove you to take up Travel and Tourism as your business plan?” She smiled again (shows the liking) and answered very professionally “I used to like organizing events, tours, picnics, etc. not only for school kids or other colleagues but also the general public including my friends outside school. I loved the fact that I was in charge of all the planning, administration and execution without any support and no one to question me on. I started enjoying the independence of those temporary trips I conducted. When things began to pick pace, I realized this is where I belong and I can start a venture that will grow exponentially”
There was nothing we could do but perhaps succumb again to a long pause and shared smiles together this time! :)
Truly, there is no stopping of a go-get-it at any age. This is one example to note that sometimes it is not the Senior Citizen tag that we should be respecting to, it is purely this ‘seniority’ that they command that we should be saluting their passion and enthusiasm to!
Cheers to all those wonderful senior citizens out there who are willing to move every brick, walk every mile to make a difference!
